Choosing a Wheelchair

Wheelchairs are a fantastic way to help you keep your independence.

From lightweight attendant-propelled chairs to the rugged all-terrain Mountain Trike, there are options available to suit all body shapes, daily activities and personal needs.

A selection of our wheelchairs are showcased online, however we have a wide range of wheelchairs in our showrooms. We always encourage you to come in and speak with our experts before making a decision, so your individual needs can be assessed and the chosen wheelchair’s fit can be adjusted to meet your specific requirements.

Our Range of Wheelchairs

There are 2 main types of wheelchairs; assisted wheelchairs and self-propelled wheelchairs. Both are available in many variations in design, size and style, so you will always find the perfect wheelchair for your individual needs.

Attendant-propelled wheelchairs are designed to be pushed from behind by another person. Attendant-propelled wheelchairs have smaller back wheels, so are often lighter and easier to transport. They are also easier to navigate and control for the person pushing, although they can prove trickier than larger-wheeled chairs to mount obstacles such as kerbs.

You will need sufficient strength and movement in your arms to use a self-propelled wheelchair. Most have push-handles for times when extra help may be needed and larger back wheels, each with an outer ‘pushrim’ that you turn to control and propel the chair. These wheels make for a bulkier chair, which may be less easy to pack into the boot of a car.

Important Considerations

When purchasing a wheelchair, it may need to meet more than just your own needs. You may need someone else to help you lift the wheelchair into the car, or perhaps someone to push you in an assisted wheelchair. Therefore, we recommend that you consider:

  • Seat position
  • Equipment dimensions
  • The weight if lifting and loading the wheelchair into the car
  • Storage availability in your home
  • If the wheelchair needs to be folding or ridged
  • Will the wheelchair be used primarily indoors or outdoors?
  • How much support must the chair provide?
  • How will the wheelchair be propelled?
