Tips for wheelchair safety during the winter

A quick look outside will tell you that winter is well on its way. The leaves are off the trees and everyone is having to scrape ice off their car windows in the morning. That’s why we’ve put together a list of tips for staying safe on your wheelchair when the really cold weather arrives.

Wear appropriate clothes

This one might seem obvious, but it’s too easy to overlook it. It’s important to wear multiple layers of breathable clothes when the temperature really drops. The layers allow warm air to get trapped and protect you from the cold.

It’s also important to make sure that you’re completely covered! For example, remember to wear gloves if you’re going to be touching cold metal parts of your wheelchair!

Temperature isn’t the only consideration you should make when you’re dressing to go out in your wheelchair. We don’t get as much daylight during the winter, so if you’re going to be outside during the dark, make sure that you wear bright clothes so that you can be seen by road users.

Keep moving

It’s essential to keep your circulation going during cold temperatures. However, if you’re wearing plenty of layers to combat the cold, you might have to remove some to prevent yourself from getting too sweaty, which could have a cooling effect on your body.

Plan your journey

This doesn’t mean that you have to give yourself turn-by-turn directions for every outing, just stay mindful of how the weather might change whilst you’re away from home, and make sure that you’ve got everything you need to deal with it.

It could be worth packing extra snacks or drinks for your journey, because dehydration can make you more susceptible to the cold!

Invest in some accessories
